It might be difficult to see , but these two pictures are taken of the same area , only with the hand held light in different locations. What we are looking at is the inside of the joists lined to allow air to return to the furnace. As you can see there is a gap between the floor joist and the metal. This leakage means the air pull back to the furnace is reduced and results in inefficiency. One of many leaks in a duct system , not installed to a better standard.

A proper installation , allowing for very little to no leakage is a homeowners dream situation.
Air delivery and removal from the ducted rooms as
drawn in the duct design is what optimizes the efficiency potential of the system.
With available access to the duct system , some of the leaks can be sealed after the original install.
